Through funding afforded by the Ohio Department of Education’s Choose Ohio First (COF) program, the cITe Scholars program at the Mount provides competitive scholarship opportunities for students looking to connect their interests in fields such as behavioral sciences, digital media and communications, liberal arts, etc., with technology.
Thus, cITe Scholars can major in their area of interest, and incorporate a duel major of Computer Science – Natural Language Processing to add a technical edge to their skill set. The Center for IT Engagement (cITe) strives to engage students in the specification, design, development and research of innovative technologies which can further research needs across various fields.
“My time at cITe thus far has given me countless opportunities to follow my passions and create lasting relationships with my peers and the faculty at MSJ,” says Ciara Tucker, a current freshman COF cITe student.
The cITe program offers exclusive research-based work opportunities for students beginning their freshman year. Since beginning their college journey just four months ago, the first cohort of Choose Ohio First scholars has had extensive involvement in several technology engagement projects that align with the Mount’s dedication to serving the community and the greater common good.
Recently, the cITe student co-research team conducted research exploring rural students’ college decision-making experiences in order to identify strategies which can be used to improve rural students’ pathways to college.
“Working with cITe has been an excellent experience providing me with research, written and spoken skills along with team work,” says Noah Douglas, a current COF cITe student. “I feel involved in real-world situations and capable of making real change through my work."
In November, these students had the opportunity to present their findings at the Australasian Action Learning Action Research Association (ALARA) conference, an international action research conference. In partnerships with the Ohio Department of Education’s Third Frontier Research Incentive program to reduce infant mortality in the state of Ohio, cITe scholars have worked on designing and developing a resource navigation tool paired with educational content aiming to connect mothers in need with crucial access to pre-natal and post-partum resource and support services. These students have also played a significant role in the facilitation, support and data validation efforts of our citizen science mobile application, Cicada Safari. The COF cITe scholarship is available for students interested in combing their passion with technology. COF financial awards are based on academic merit and can be up to $8,000 per academic year.
