Mount St. Joseph University (Mount) is proud to announce the appointment of Joe Shadle as chief mission officer.

In this role, Shadle will lead efforts to expand the Mount’s commitment to its mission, Catholic identity, and its founders, the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati.

“Joe brings a strong commitment to mission-driven leadership and a deep understanding of faith-based higher education,” said Dr. H. James Williams, president of Mount St. Joseph University. “His experience and vision will strengthen the Mount’s identity and advance the mission, vision, and values.”

Shadle expressed his enthusiasm for the Mount’s mission when learning of the appointment, “I am honored to be joining the faculty, staff, and students at Mount St. Joseph University as we work together to advance the vision of the Mount’s founders, the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. The Mount’s reputation for academic excellence and service rooted in social justice reflects my own values and I look forward to working together as we educate students who will further the common good.”

Shadle joins the Mount with more than 25 years of experience in Catholic higher education, spiritual formation, and mission integration. He most recently served as executive director of the Center for Mission and Identity at Xavier University, where he led initiatives to embed the Jesuit Catholic mission across all facets of university life. He also held previous roles as Director of Campus Ministry and adjunct faculty member at Xavier, the Athenaeum of Ohio, and Thomas More University, teaching courses in Sacred Scripture, World Religions, and Spirituality and Leadership.

Shadle holds a Master of Divinity and an M.A. in Biblical Studies from the Athenaeum of Ohio, an M.B.A. from Xavier University, and a B.A. in Business Management and Psychology from Walsh University.

His contributions to Catholic education and ministry have been widely recognized, including the Outstanding Part-Time Teacher of the Year award from Thomas More University in 2016 and a nomination for the JASPA Ignatian Medal for New Professionals in Jesuit Student Affairs. He is a longtime contributor to the work of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) and currently chairs the Clinical Pastoral Education Professional Advisory Committee at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

A dynamic speaker and retreat leader, Shadle is known for engaging students, faculty, staff, and community members through the topics of scripture, spirituality, and leadership.

Shadle’s appointment reaffirms Mount St. Joseph University’s unwavering dedication to providing an education founded on Catholic values, academic excellence, and service rooted in the vision of the founders, the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati.
