Amy Murdoch, Ph.D., Professor and Reading Science Program Director in the School of Education at Mount St. Joseph University, was recently quoted in the prestigious New Yorker article, “Dyslexia and the Reading Wars.” A nationally recognized leader in Reading Science, Dr. Murdoch’s expertise continues to shape conversations around effective literacy instruction and teacher preparation.

In the article, Dr. Murdoch emphasizes the power of evidence-based approaches for teaching reading:

“Struggling readers, in particular, need instructors who have been trained in what’s now broadly referred to as structured literacy, research-based instruction, or the science of reading. Such methods are rooted in a neuroscientific understanding of the elements of reading, with an emphasis on enabling students to accurately decode written representations of spoken language. Amy Murdoch, the director of the reading-science program at Mount St. Joseph University, in Cincinnati, said that these methods provide the best framework to teach even non-dyslexic people to read; still, at many universities it is possible to earn an advanced degree in early education without learning them.”

Laura Saylor, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Education at Mount St. Joseph University, shared her pride in Dr. Murdoch’s national recognition:

“I just wanted to share how incredibly proud we are to see Amy Murdoch quoted in the recent New Yorker article, “Dyslexia and the Reading Wars”. Having her voice featured in such a widely respected national publication is a significant achievement—particularly on a topic so central to our mission and impact in literacy and teacher preparation. This recognition speaks to Amy’s expertise and leadership while also elevating the visibility of Reading Science, the School of Education, and the important work taking place at MSJ.”

Congratulations Amy Murdoch on this incredible accomplishment. You truly are a beacon for the region and our university!
