There’s a new club on campus—Philosophy Club—and you are invited.

We typically meet twice a month and on varying dates, but we have one meeting at the start of the month at school on a Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Our second meeting of the month is going to be an off-campus event somewhere around the Greater Cincinnati area. This club has 12 members so far.

We plan to take our first off-campus trip to the Cincinnati Observatory. Requirements for this trip and any future trips are that you must become a member by coming to an on-campus meeting or emailing Philosophyclubatmsj@gmail.com .

I started Philosophy Club because philosophy is such a complex, fun topic.  Most people don’t really know how to define philosophy. It is best defined by our club advisor, Dr. Chris Davidson: “Philosophy is the work of finding the real-world truth, beyond just hoping something might be true, or believing something because it feels good; philosophy wants proof that it is certainly true.”

Although that may sound intense, philosophy is also addresses fun, deep life questions. Like how would you know if you were truly awake right now or not? What is your soul? What are soulmates?

I felt this campus needed more clubs and student events; philosophy just happens to be a topic that can touch on any subject and appeal to everyone in one way. And it would also be a great way for people who are not from the Cincinnati area to get to see more historic and fun buildings and events that the city has to offer. All off-campus events will be free to club members as well as providing free transportation.
