Navigate Your Transition to
Mount St. Joseph University with Ease.
The transition to college is a big step. Our First-Year Programming equips you with the tools and support you need to thrive.
The transition to college is a transformative time for students and a period of great change and growth. The Mount's First-Year Programming is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to be successful during their college years and beyond. Through class workshops, hands-on activities, class discussions, and guidance from various campus professionals, students will work to develop stronger success habits in the areas of campus involvement, executive functioning skills, effective study strategies, financial literacy, health and wellness, and more.
The FYE Program is a three-course program, consisting of the following:
FYE 101 FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE is a transitional course designed to help first-year and transfer students successfully navigate college life. This course introduces essential academic skills, time management strategies, campus resources, and personal development tools to promote student success. Through interactive discussions and activities, students will build a strong foundation for their college journey, develop critical thinking skills, and establish meaningful connections within the campus community.
FYE 102 LEADER, MENTOR, AGENT OF CHANGE focuses on developing self-leadership and the foundational skills needed to become an effective peer mentor. Students will explore leadership styles, communication techniques, and strategies for fostering inclusivity and student engagement. This course emphasizes personal growth, teamwork, and mentorship skills, preparing students to serve as role models and guides for first-year students.
FYE 103 PEER MENTOR PROGRAM provides college credit to students selected as Peer Mentors for first-year students. In this practicum-based course, students apply mentoring strategies learned in FYE 102 to support and guide new students in their transition to college. Peer Mentors will participate in ongoing training, engage in reflective practice, and receive feedback to enhance their leadership and mentorship abilities. This hands-on experience strengthens their ability to support others while further developing their own communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
