What are the Requirements?

• Clinical preceptors must be licensed physicians (MD/DO), physician assistants, nurse midwives, or nurse practitioners.
• Physicians must be board certified, board eligible, or have demonstrated experience in the specialty in which they are training students.
• Medical residents can participate in the training but cannot be the preceptor of record.
• Students can be shared among providers, to allow the mentoring and training experience to span beyond one provider.

• A clinical rotation is 5 weeks in duration with a goal of approximately 150 hours of clinical experience.
• During that period preceptors are expected to provide clinical education consistent with their normal daily activities with respect to patient care.
• A detailed syllabus with learning outcomes, objectives, and relevant disease processes is provided to each preceptor and is specific to the type of rotation.
• It is not the preceptor’s responsibility to ensure that all learning outcomes, objectives and disease processes are covered. Students are expected to supplement the clinical experience with reading assignments and activities assigned by the program that cover relevant rotation content.
• Preceptors are asked to complete a short electronic evaluation of the student at the conclusion of the 5 week rotation.
